Sheffield is a cosmopolitan city in South Yorkshire. Traditionally it formed part of the area known as the West Riding. With some of its southern suburbs annexed from Derbyshire, the city has grown from its largely industrial roots to encompass a wider economic base.


In the city of Sheffield, the population by mid-2017 was estimated as 577,800, as the one of the largest districts the metropolitan population is 1,569,000.


It is known as the Steel City internationally due to its steel production which started during the industrial revolution. Many innovations were developed by Sheffield, including stainless and crucible steel. Extensive development has taken place so far in the 21st century and the local economy has grown with it.


As home to the oldest football club in the world, Sheffield F.C., the city has a long sporting heritage. Games between Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United clubs are now known as the Steel City Derby.


Sheffield has two universities, the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University.


The two universities combined accommodate 65,000 students in the city. Sheffield University was established in 1897 as University College Sheffield, and became the University of Sheffield in 1905.


The University of Sheffield recently ranked in the top 50 international universities in the world. This announcement was made on Wednesday the 14th of March 2018 by The Times Higher Education, when it was ranked out to over 800 leading universities as 42nd. A key factor that contributed to the success of the University is its overseas partnerships with top universities around the globe, which includes student exchanges, international opportunities for teachers and research collaboration. Currently, 29,000 of the brightest students from more than 140 countries attend the University.


Sheffield offers a world-class shopping experience with over 260 retailers, catering for everyone’s needs. Its independent and authentic spirit is imitated in its retail, and there are several clusters of independent shops in a few of the cities areas. A host of big names can be found in The Moor and Fargate shopping precincts, while Meadowhall is the largest shopping centre in Yorkshire.

Outside of London, Sheffield has the largest theatre complex comprising of the Crucible Studios, Lyceum Theatre and the Crucible Theatre. The most prominent galleries in Sheffield include the Millennium and Graves Galleries both managed by Museum Sheffield, while the Site Gallery is home to the biggest metal display.


Sheffield’s lively nightlife in the city centre includes everything a student heart could desire. From sipping on exotic cocktails, to the greatest selection of bars and old English pubs. The density of the Steel City lends itself well to an enjoyable night out, offering a variety of establishments that don’t need the services of a cab to move from one nightspot to the next. Each of the streets including Carver, West and Division adjoin to offer a main tour of bars, while each maintains its very own distinct character. The reduced travel needed in the city also makes student life a lot cheaper than other larger cities.
